My son asked me the difference between pesto and chutney. Traditionally, pesto is made with basil and it is pounded together with other ingredients. According to google the word pesto means ‘pounded’ in Italian. Today you hear different pesto from arugula to coriander. Indian chutneys are very similar. They were ground in a stone hand grinder (a bigger pestle and mortar). Chutney originates from the hindi word -‘chatna’- ‘to lick or to relish’. Indian chutneys are spicy with the addition of green or red chilies. The common chutneys are coconut, coriander, mint, tomato, sweet tamarind chutney. Peanut chutney is also scrumptious.
